Sailing Family: We thought about Mandela

When the Danish family Quist Johansen in February this year was taken hostage by Somali pirates, they decided quickly to keep hope and keep in good shape mentally and physically.

It tells the couple Jan and Marie Quist Johansen in an inter-married with Bådmagasinet – the first interview, the family gives, after the sixth September was released by pirates.

– We agree that we, like Mandela will keep hoping. Pirates may expose us to violence, but it is we who decide what we think, says Jan Quist Johansen, referring to South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned during the apartheid regime in 27 years.

cooked for Pirates When the pirates on 24 February 2011 hijacked the Danish family’s sailboat, the ING family were ‘appalling afraid. ” But at the same time acted as “surprisingly reasonable. ‘

– I cooked for them (the pirates, ed.), so they should not be hungry and angry, tells Marie Quist Johansen among others in Bådmagasinet.

crafted their own games A few weeks after taking hostage the family is installed on the Greek freighter Dover – a filthy ship, the pirates slowly cut up for firewood, and where the goats go around.

Yet Quist Johansen family begins to clean in their cabin. The family plays a variety of board games that they themselves make of plastic and cardboard. Marie keeps a daily school ship for the three children Hjalte, Rune and Naja – and at a time, children book talks about everything from love to law with their parents.

stands together as in bad weather According to Jan Quist Johansen was the family’s sailing experiences a decisive factor in that they have fared relatively whole through the hostage crisis:

– We’re used to being together in very little space and used to do without many goods and put things in motion. It looks like it to be out in bad weather. It’s not very nice, but we are together to get it through, says Jan Quist Johansen Bådmagasinet.
