Denmark is well on its way into a resource crisis. And therefore we must roll up our sleeves and had to get ready ourselves in much more to conserve resources and sort and recycle their waste instead of burning it off at CHP.

This is the message from Environment Minister Ida Auken, who in the new year will launch a resource plan for the country’s municipalities to replace the traditional waste management plans, Jyllands-Posten.

No longer smart with combustion

– We simply consider waste as a resource and having so much out of it as possible. It was smart to burn it in the 1990s, but now it’s resources, which will be our main problem, says Ida Auken told the newspaper.

A vital commodity for all of our food production, phosphorus fertilizer, is a good example. In the past, phosphorus formed by a natural recirculation from manure, but in the last 50 years the use of extracted phosphorus multiplied. This means not only soaring prices, but also to the long term is not enough phosphorus in the subsoil. Therefore, the Danes started to sort their household waste, so we can use the organic fraction of waste – that is all waste food and more – in biogas plants, thereby extracting phosphorus and fertilizer, says the invitation.

Environment Minister also points out that electronics waste is to be harnessed.
