DRC meetings much support in Somalia
Danish Refugee Council has received strong backing and support in Somalia, after the two aid workers, 60-year-old Paul Hagen Thisted and his 32-year-old American colleague, Jessica Buchanan, was abducted 25th in October.
– We are told that all we are in contact with, is working to help us and to reach the kidnappers with the message that it is utterly unacceptable to kidnap aid workers, says Mary Ann Olsen, International Director The Danish Refugee Council.
Overwhelming response Since the two employees in the Danish Refugee Council’s demining unit was abducted, the refugee assistance and demining unit, Danish Demining Group, appealed to the leaders, representatives of the Somali clans, networks and media.
– response has been overwhelming, says Ann Mary Olsen said in a statement.
Danish Refugee Council is experiencing in these days so much support in the Somali community from both official and leading personnel and civilians.
Condemning the kidnapping It has among others led to major demonstrations and condemnation of the kidnapping in the area where it occurred.
– We are extremely pleased with the assistance and expressions we get from the Somali community. We hope it means that Paul and Jessica can go faster free and back to their families, says Mary Ann Olsen.
Danish Refugee Council and demining department Danish Deming Group helps up to 450,000 people in the Horn. In Galkayo in central Somalia, where the kidnapping took place, work is temporarily suspended.
